We should all focus on a healthy lifestyle and a good diet to optimise macula, retinal and overall eye health.
Excellent vision comes from a diet that supports optimal macular health.
So how can we achieve this?
Reduce the risk of macular degeneration by eating a diet high in antioxidants, found in foods such as spinach, broccoli (or broccolini), kale, oranges, berries, kiwi fruit and some beans.
Possibly, the best source of dietary antioxidants is the egg. Eggs and macular health are inextricably linked.
We also need to consume some oil in the diet. The fatty acid omega-3s in fish, such as salmon, can improve the quality of our tears and reduce inflammation in the macula in addition to improving vision. Try to eat foods that are low in sodium and saturated fats, such as nuts, olive oil, nuts and vegetables. Avoid eating a diet based on processed foods and minimise your intake of refined foods.
A healthy, Mediterranean-style diet that is low in red meat and excessive alcohol, and high in fruits, vegetables, olive oil, and beans is a good dietary lifestyle choice.
When your macula health declines, you are much more likely to develop macular degeneration. Adults over 50 who smoke, have higher blood pressure and high blood sugar are much more at risk and don’t forget to exercise! Staying active is key to good overall health.
Good eye health involves protecting the retina and preventing macular degeneration.
These simple, but effective dietary and lifestyle choices can help keep the eyes healthy for a lifetime.
