Diabetes can have a profound effect on your vision.

For this reason the Australian Health Insurance Commission provides a Medicare rebate for examination of your vision by your optometrist every year to monitor the changes that this disease can cause to your eyes and sight. Our optometrist at Vision Excellence is happy to work with your GP or diabetic specialist in the Hills District or elsewhere to protect your vision. The more controlled you can keep your blood levels as recommended by your diabetes practitioner, the less likely you will be to experience damage to your eyes by diabetes.

We have equipped our new Norwest practice with instruments to specifically check your eyes so that we can detect and monitor changes to your sight.

The first sign that this may be affecting your eyes is that you may find your vision fluctuates from day to day. This can be an early sign that your diabetes is less well controlled.

A more serious effect is an increased risk of cataract and glaucoma, as a result of change to the structure of the lens inside your eye and the blood supply to your optic nerve. Our optometrist will examine your eyes for any cataract or damage to your eyes by glaucoma.

The most profound damage that diabetes can inflict on the eye is when there is a leakage of fluid in the retina at the back of the eye. This condition is called diabetic retinopathy. At Vision Excellence, our optometrist will carefully check the retina of your eyes in our Norwest practice on a yearly basis for any sign of diabetic retinopathy.
